Mahanati is a biopic of a trilingual epic drama from South India written by Nag Ashwin, based on the life of the Savitri aids in South India. Featuring Keerthy Suresh, Samantha Akkineni, Dulquer Salmaan and Vijay Devarakonda in lead roles, the film began production in May 2017 and is scheduled to be released on March 29, 2018.
The director Nag Ashwin, who had already directed Yevade Subramanyam (2016), a film that would be his next film would be a biopic of the South Indian actress Savitri and that it would be shot simultaneously in Telugu and Tamil. Titled Mahanati, Ashwin revealed that he had finished working on the script and was launching actors to be part of the project.
The team continued to talk with the actresses for the lead role, and despite long discussions with Nithya Menen, the actress did not accept to sign the film. Samantha was the first major actor to be screened in the film in December 2016 and revealed that she would represent a character from whose perspective the story is told, rather than the role of Savitri.
